Well no if the pump can only make 50 psi then no shimming of the valve would change that , but i'm sure all car oil pumps are designed to run a lot more pressure than they actually do and just bleed the rest off via the valve , so I think shimming the spring will make a difference on all engines...
Are you saying the pump can't physically make more than 50 psi of pressure ? have you tested this , and tested shimming the spring to see what difference this makes , it works on all other cars so I fail to see why it wouldn't work on the 172 engine , it works on the Williams engine as you can...
Can you tighten up the tolerance between the pump body and gears ? this will surely reduce the amount of pressure you're loosing , perhaps its worth looking to see what clearance is there on a standard pump , and if that clearance can be improved on.

Aren't the standard valves in a vauxhall engine nylon ?? They have issues with them sticking and losing oil pressure , happened to me before which took a bottom end out.
so what are the mods you say can be done to a standard pump , I can't see after looking inside the pump

Just taken photo's of a brand new pump I have had delivered to have a look at it , looks easy enough to shim the spring , I guess i'm missing the obvious part about upping the oil pressure !
After speaking to SWR this afternoon , who tell me they used to rebuild a lot of these engines in the Clio cup series say they did used to shim the springs up in the pumps to up the pressure , I'm sure if there was another way he would have told me
I was actually running 3.5-3.8 bar hot under revs , which I agree in my eye's is not enough , my golf rally engine putting out 250hp is running 85 psi hot , just over 6 bar , most cars I have had run at about this pressure , my GTR road car runs 6 bar hot .

i wasn't involved with the build so can't answer that , arrow said it wouldn't show up if someone built the engine and plastigauged it , it would show as ok , is it normal practice to check rods that way before building , I'm not an engine builder so wouldn't know
you can see the oil pressure gauge on the video , there is no loss of oil pressure , if it was the engine design it would have done it back in march when I did exactly the same rally , and the 12 rallies or so I did last year with the same set up , the race cars are cornering far far harder than...
Took the crank out of the block today , crank is looking good , could do with a polish to make it perfect , will get it checked out to make sure all is good.
you can see the nose of the crank needs machining to fit the oil pump drive
all the bearings are good which shows the crank should...
The few engines I have seen for sale were fitted with standard sump , so could have the standard pick ups , the current R3 clios run standard sump pickups and baffles
Yeah seen the ones available for this engine , but my engine mount is in the way to the one that fits on the inlet side , and the dry sump pump that fits on the exhaust side would get in the way of the drive shaft

From what I can see no Renault works rally car has ever been dry sumped , that must mean the wet sump is up to the job , as Fred says , check out the videos , I have checked through loads and never had a drop in oil pressure , I certainly don't think it's surge with the cornering forces we see ...
My last engine probably cost over £5k and it went 250 miles ! it will see about 1000 miles between rebuilds with the rallies I do per year

pistons and rods are a lot different from standard , the rods are longer , the pistons are single ring slipper pistons , and both the big and little ends are smaller than standard

if your still running the standard engine mounts the dry sump setup fitted to the inlet side of the engine might fit , don't think it will on mine as I'm running the racer setup where the engine is mounted to the subframe and the pump setup will foul my front offside engine mount , the sodemo...
It won't cost that much , my golf head needed welding and machining after it detonated , had to have the valve seats recut as I bought new valves for it and it only cost about £200 to have done , this head is in a worse state but I reckon it will cost less than £500 then a new set of valves.

No didn't have the dry sump or throttle bodies , the dry sump is where the O/S drive shaft will be , and the throttle bodies would be hanging out of the bonnet , just had the bare engine , good buy for a grand I think

looks like it has the basis to build a serious engine , some real trick bits , a different animal to a standard engine , the chamber is in a mess from a valve head...
Tried ringing and texting you Fred , I guess your busy , any news on how your getting on with my engine , will it be ready for Epynt 2 weeks today as I have to put an entry in before the closing date , it was today but has been extended to tuesday

I was planning on the engine lasting longer than 250 miles tbh ! but hey sh1t happens , the engine would get a refresh once a year and go on for quite some time , you don't plan on being this unlucky , it would be sods law you'd build a spare engine for £6k or so and then not need it , its a lot...
