We use this in our meeting rooms at work. It works well as a low cost alternative but frame rates can be a bit iffy sometimes with games. Some YT videos also refuse to play too, but the majority are fine.

Late reply as I was on holiday. Mirroring an iPhone screen has been possible since the 4s and the iPad 2 AFAIK. My iPhone 5 and iPad 2 can definitely do it, and just AirPlay videos/ music is possible on the earlier models too.

If it's only for home use, take it back and buy an Apple TV. It doesn't cost loads more, but the wireless AirPlay is worth it alone. I found the cable always fell out of my old iPad and phone when I used it. I don't remember having a problem with a black border around videos either.

What is the USB cable plugged into? Your computer or the iPad charger? iPhone chargers and most USB ports don't supply sufficient power to charge the iPad (quickly).

It's just the surround sound that you miss with AirPlay. Not the end of the world,but it is nice to have sometimes.

I'd agree, but coupled with a home server and/or iDevice and it's a must have. There are also ways to run Plex on it locally, without a Jailbreak, albeit with a few bugs at the minute.
