For my second engine rebuild I want a turbo conversion. I know it would be simple to just add a meg 225 engine, but this is not what I want.
I think I have some options here:
1st: use all 225 internals, like pistons and head. this will drop the CR and the head accept 225 manifold.
2st. use the...
But you need to sort the dephaser problem, you have to use 197 dephaser so need variable signal from the ecu. And the 172 ecu does not have this, only on/off. Also need to drill new holes there. I stick with modified 182 head due to costs.
Head is now on. Unfortunately it will be used with 182 inlet for now because I need remap for 197 inlet and did not know where in my country. So for now the standard inlet will be just ok.
Next week I will install the cams and do the magic timing with a custom locking tool.
Bottom end is now...
Because in Romania was hard to find someone than can map 421 cams, I end up using a 197 inlet, 197 cams and arps. With fully rebuild engine. The head was modified to accept 197 inlet. I around a week the assembly will be done.
First day, I've use plastigauge to measure tolerances, everything was good. 1.5 thou on big end and 2 thou on main end.
Hope in this weekend I will have time to put the rings on pistons and assemble the bottom end.
The problem is I cannot find the OE aux pulley for sale on a decent...
If you search here you will find a topic with tests on air filters. It may be close to best, if not the best, what you have mention there. Sport filter in stock case is perfect, just a little quite than other induction.
I think this is the correct form:
From other f4r builder here, the "best" clearance for oe specs on the bearings is 0.035 (~1.5 thou) on rod bearings and 0.05 (~2 thou) on main bearings.
Also, each time when you rebuild and engine get quality parts, better to use oem for engine refresh and...
Calipers rebuild is done, have new seals and dust boots and new braided brake lines.
Next week I will receive the new pistons and start assembling the engine :)
After another research, I think for Big end is 0.02 - 0.07mm and for main a little bigger clearance, 0.04 - 0.075 mm. But NO SURE, please some confirm this. I find both values for big end, but there should be a mistake.
Also, for the piston ring clock, manual says 120 degrees for compression...
Since this information is not on each topic, I try to make a small table to can help us when check or rebuild or 172 or 182 engines.
I read some manuals from renault, but really could not find main bearings clearance and also find two values for rod bearings. Have someone any additional info...
After I clean the old pistons I realize they were gone, the coating on them is damaged. So...new 4 oem pistons on next order. I have now all the parts needed to put my engine together. Here is a list with everything.
Bottom end:
-resurfaced engine block and deglazed
-new OE big end bearings
-new...
I forgot to post.
The big end bearings were original ones with the short part number (the last 6 digits from the 10 digit part number) and they still look like new.
The main bearings also were the oem ones, but one of then have a broken piece. It was still on the bearing, and when I remove the...
The engine block was cleaned, lot of brake cleaner, then lot of oil and patient. Clean each hole and then add new oil into oil pump hole and blown with air to fully lube everything.
I have to wait 2 weeks until ARP will arrive from US.
0.04mm skim from the engine surface. So overall was under 0.2mm skimming, so compression will be slightly under 11.2:1. Maybe I will get the 0.7mm thickness Elring gasket, but not so sure if they make that gasket of really 0.7mm and not of 0.65mm like OE specs.
Hi Mark,
I did not want to raise the compression, I took the head from machine shop and the less material was 0.12mm or 0.15mm (need to look again). I also have some small grooves on the block am skim by 0.05mm for a good surface.
I know it does affect the timing, the tensioner cannot tension a...
Th
Athena is a little too expensive for this project, but I find that Elring one is 0.7mm thick, so the overall skimming will be less than 0.15mm.
Thanks for your reply!
