The dephaser will spin on the cam as it's not keyed. So the new dephaser will not ensure the timing is correct. Only someone who knows how to use the correct tools will ensure correct the timing.
It doesn't sound good I'm afraid. Once they've bent valves, they won't make any noise. Just spin really quickly.
Open the oil cap and try to start it. Look at the cam and see if you can see it turning.
You want to raise it to about 2000 rpm and set the spark table to zero, and use a timing light to check it's correct.
