172/182's aren't a usual car to do belts on. They have specific tools to do them, and the cheap and nasty pattern ones bend and give incorrect performance.

Higher Ron, means you can run more ignition advance. More advance means you get more power per cycle. Which now means you can put less fuel in to get the same amount of power out.
You can check them for play, but that's about it. I always advise them to be replaced before having them apart. 9/10 they're going anyway. But sometimes the customers just want to get it done and as cheap as possible.
