The fuse is not needed but a safety thing. I run a Proper Bulk head joiner so i didnt bother with the Fuse, I have a battery On /off swith in the car so i can turn the battery live on or off in the engien bay

Try getting a set of jump leads put one side on the gearbox and the other too the side of the EARTH on the battery, see if this sorts it the Earth thats located on the NS chassis leg is common with age

P.s If you need some Heat resistant material oo stop the bulk head setting on fire :) let me know the same stuff the renault f1 team use withstand 4000degree with 1mm clearance :)
