Do they have some miracle way of mating all of the friction surfaces together, or do they really bench run the engines through hundreds of 'miles' at varying loads?

Unlikely, the engine is a Nissan unit and the 'box is made by Getrag. I'm sure Fred said without too much effort they run a very reliable 350bhp on 24hr race cars.
The limiting factor is the torque capability of the 'box...I wouldn't want to be the one that discovers at what point that gives up!

Does that mean just about every single other 'performance' car out there is also a complete fail as there are few others that allow total disconnection of the ESP safety net? I expect it is possible on an AMG or a Porsche RS etc. but on the Audi RS3 or Golf R?

I thought it was a Fiesta with a pokey lump under the bonnet. It's not been touted as the ultimate driving machine. That was always the Clio's claim.
For me the difference was circa £3k.
Yes the RS Clio comes with more but I wouldn't spend money to get any of the things it includes. Navigation, auto lights/wipers, cruise control...are all of no interest to me at all. I'm quite happy turning a knob or pressing a button to do those things...I...
So long as mine arrives when scheduled (currently around 13th July) I'll be taking it around Goodwood on 10th August. Should be nicely run in then so can have a proper play and see if the ESC 'off' is intruding or if it's just the torque-vectoring trying to be clever.

Always off in the Clio.
Never had the option in the 172 Cup so when I first took the 200 out I switched it off from the outset.
Around Llandow I did leave it on at first in the wet as the surface/grip levels were unknown...it did permit a fair bit of movement but whenever it did intervene it...
From the video he didn't have any issue getting it out of shape...it certainly wasn't being snatched back on-line. He said it was still trying to 'trim' the line on occasions. I think he's feeling the torque-vectoring...and the brakes nibbling away at the front wheels on the way through a turn...
Will be interesting to see what he makes of them when he drives them back to back. For now though he still has a lot of love for the Clio.
I think when he does get them out together, the weight of the Clio will count against it. Or maybe it won't as the fancy dampers make it all so manageable...
Half is all my 172 Cup ever got to in 8 years and 125k miles.

There is no 'Cup' model. They're all the same spec and interior wise.
you can specify the 'Cup' chassis which gives different springs/dampers/wheels/tyres...apart from that, everything is he same.
If everything is exactly as it should be, as we've been led to believe, there should only be 40kgs difference between the 200T and the ST.
Why is it over 100kgs different?

No, you've got it wrong...my 200 only makes 194bhp...proven on a rolling road.
The point is...generally what Renault state is some way from reality. Power, weight, whatever.
They say it weighs 1,204kgs...it actually weights 1,300kgs.
