Forget the idea the 172 has the VVt as well and the engines are more expensive plus the 172 hads a different head and CR so the car would need to be remapped.
Just get the block code and use that I'm sure the engine was used in other Renaults.

Just get a 172/1.6 or any clio with rear disks.

And yes its the reason for your problem all other conversions have it as well unless they chnage to proper disk or do some engineeering work.
