I'm guessing that this must be a bad batch to be knocking so soon.
Adam, do you have the pure mounts, they seem to be a common factor in most of the cars that are knocking?
Try putting some 3 in 1 oil on the pure top mount bearings and see if this helps ( the bearings my be dry and contain some grit).
Also try rinsing the coilovers, rotating the springs and spraying them with lithium grease (if you suspect a spring issue).
Mine seemed to be noisier in the dry...
I really did consider selling mine, but i wasn't willing to put them on the forum with the knocking. I sent the whole suspension off to Bilstein for an assessment for my piece of mind.
With the overhaul, carriage and rear damper test it was £250, i didn't want to be spending the money, but i...
On the plus side, i had my rear dampers checked at the same time and was provided with a rebound graph.
The rears are absolutely fine and still within spec, so it would appear that it is just the front struts that have issues.
I really can't fault the ride for a road car, but Bilstein clearly have an issue with the bushings (see bmw and mazda forums). I appreciate that all suspension gets tired and will fail given enough time.
The bushings seem to allow water and road salt to enter and this causes the failure. Solid...
Mine lasted about 2 years before the knocking began, you could really feel the play in the shafts when the car was on a lift. The noise was annoying, but the coilovers worked.
The suspension is now better than ever, following a rebuild. I did think about the spax setup myself, but for £200 they...
The bearings inside my struts were corroded, i also have the pure setup.
I lubricated the pure bearings, as i thought this may have been the source of my knocking noise on turning and at low speeds in traffic. It wasn't, the only other thing to try is to wash the coilovers with a hose, and...
Jack the car up, grab the front struts and give them a pull. You should be able to feel the play in the shaft, if it wobbles, you need new bearings.
I replaced lower arms, ball joints, track rod ends and arb bushes only to find that it was the coilovers.
They have been silent since the...
Send them here, but ring first if you want a quick turn around.

Phil, mine did exactly the same. Have had them rebuilt for £80+ vat each. Water gets into the top bearings and causes them to fail.
They were rebuilt in 2 working days.
Craig, i found my btb stealth a bit too boomy on long journeys. If you want quiet why don't you try the BTB ninja (if you are willing to spend the extra).
I ended up selling the btb and having a quiet custom system made at prospeed. BTB build quality is exceptional though.
I think stu has a good point. Pull the top cover off, from behind the clocks and the wheel.
Make sure the plugs are firmly engaged, i think there are two, one yellow, one black.
May be worth disconnecting your battery first for 30 mins. I think one of these plugs is for the airbag. You don't...
Impreza, i have 438's so i will give you my opinion of them.
Is the money well spent on cams?
I would only suggest investing in cams if you intend to keep the car long term and are not going to sell it a month after you have the work done.
You must be prepared to sacrifice the money invested...
Do you have any friends with a 172/182?
Take out your friends grab handle, plug it into your wiring. If the fault goes away, you will know that the switch is faulty. If it doesn't, then the problem lies elsewhere.
Bad connection somewhere, maybe a dry solder joint on the plug leading to the airbag switch?
Have you checked the wiring under the seats, give it a wiggle, so if the light comes on/off?
Take the passenger grab handle out, check that the block connector underneath the airbag key is pushed all the way in.
Mine was loose, pushed it in, no more lights.
I am considering getting my front B14's refurbished and need the car for the time that this is undertaken.
If it takes longer than expected, then this was my backup plan.
I find the bilsteins a touch harsh for everyday driving and would like some damping adjustment if i am travelling to/from...
Without a map to suit it would be best to take it off, i found the same when i fitted the v6 airbox to a standard car. With an rstuner map it was fine.
I bought the PS3 tyres as i assumed the additional outlay would get me at least 10K, rather than the 5K from the t1r.
I can only assume that the PS3 is made from a softer compound than the PE2 that preceeded them.
Some of the wear is down to the superior grip and subsequent enthusiastic...
I found the t1r tyre fine in the dry and i don't push my luck in the wet, for my cup they were fine for the money.
They were predictable, even when down to the wear indicators.
T1r's lasted 5000 miles on the front
PS3 lasted 4500 miles on the front - i found the wear quite alarming, so much...
Aaron, i had the same problem. I changed the throttle body and the accelerator pedal and the fault has not reappeared in 12 months.
I think i was the throttle body, but i changed both for piece of mind.
I bought a 197 body from a low mileage car, they are the same part no as the 172/182. The...
Had the same problem, replaced the throttle body and the accelerator pedal. Fault has gone.
Try and get a second hand throttle body and swap it over, hopefully it will cure your issues.
Re: Steering wheel jumps around when road has bit of camber
If they have play, then best to get them changed, only way to find out.
Unless you can live with it.
Re: Steering wheel jumps around when road has bit of camber
Do you have camber bolts fitted, or is the car very low? If you have neither then try the track rod ends next.
Re: Steering wheel jumps around when road has bit of camber
Too much camber would do this, do you have camber readings from the alignment? The difference between -0.5 and -1.0 degrees is noticeable. Turn in is better, but you compromise the cars sensitivity to imperfections and the crown of the...
B14's are excellent on the cup, they are quite firm at low speed, but are very controlled at high speed. I think you would have to be doing something really outrageous to unsettle them.
I have them with standard top mounts.
The damping is fine for road use, you feel the bumps but they don't...
