Nope! Only Cups and only if they -dont- have air-con!!
I phoned John @ R-Sport, asking for an R-Sport ECU for a Cup with a/c (thinking if they say it fits and a/c Cup, then there might be a hope for a std 172. Previously, people have said that the R-Sport ECU wont work on a 172 becuase of all...
Does anyone have a good knowledge of the spec of these ECUs, what they alter, and where they are sourced from, just that...
.... I recall Simon172 fitting one on his Mk1 172 and taking it off because it ran like a dog afterwards
... I believe they are sourced from RenaultSport in Dieppe...
*LOL* Well, the old (std) pads lasted a mere 7k miles and about 5 track days! The PF carbon ones are much harder and are supposed to last much longer. But then again, £120 for pads every 18 months isnt too bad if you spend a fair amount of time on-track.
Ive got Performance Friction Carbon Metallic pads on my Mk2 172 and theyve superb! A bit noisey but they dont fade, even on track days. Pads are about £120.
Shame R-Sports mods dont work on a normal 172 and they have no plans to adapt the Cup ECU for a 172 either :@
According to R-Sport, the engine in the Cup is different so the inlet manifold and ECU upgrades dont work on a normal 172.
If the R-Sport car was the one with the daft stick-on bonnet vent, then it wasnt that quick. I remember from Donningon that it was behind me a few times and certainly didnt have enough extra power to out pace me on the straights.
Phoned R-Sport today, who werent able to comment as the main contact wasnt in (Jonathon). I asked if their ECU worked on a Cup with AC - surely the first tell-tale sign that it would also work on a normal 172? Well see what they say tomorrow...
I take your point.... I would appear to have a reasonably quick 172 - it put out 172bhp on BB Tunings RR and is quick enough on track against other 172s.
Im not convinced about the Unichip as its an add on and, AFAIK, relies on the knowledge of the fitter to set it up properly. Ive spoken to a...
So, the question must be, does the R-Sport ECU work on a Cup with air-con? If it doesnt then the incompatibility theory is stronger. If it does however, there may be hope for us 172 owners!
According to an earlier post elsewhere, the Cup ECU has a few less functions than the 172 one, hence the incompatibility.
Or, it could just be a cunning plan to charge more for the 172 one!!
Anyone have any news on when itll be available for the 172 (not Cup)?
I didnt get a chance to speak to R-Sport @ Donnington, but Im hoping itll be out soon, otherwise itll have to be a save-up-and-go-for-Roamers-throttle-bodies option!
I was right behind the guy as he rolled it - all I saw was a cloud of smoke with a spinning Clio Cup in it, then it hit the gravel, flipped and rolled onto its roof. Myself and another Cup driver stopped but the Jag safety car was there in double quick time and the guy got out and looked OK...
Well, my OE pads lasted 7500 miles and about 5 track days! Ive since replaced them with Performance Friction Carbon Metallic pads (Clio Cup racer spec) which are superb.....Ill test them on the track at Donnington next week :-)
