Call me a cynic, but this post just pops up after a heated discussion about LADs 172 conversion in the General forum. Theres no real detail on whats actually done for £1200, and no before and after independant rolling road print-outs. Sounds like not-so-stealth marketing to me!!
I think, from memory, the manual recommends 32/30 for the 172 and higher for high speed driving. I tried 34/32 round Brands and the car was very skittish. I dropped down to 32/30 and then 30/28 and the car handled much better - far more progressive, especially on the limit.
My only reservations on the AVOs are that they are too hard for the std 172 dampers, which struggle over bumpy surfaces, and cause the car to become very bouncy. Jamie on here had problems with the ride height on 17s too, although ak_uks on std 16s is fine.
I bit the bullet and got a s/h set...
Thanks for the comments guys.
I wonder why BB Tunings car ran fine then, and didnt run lean at all?Personally, I cant see why adding an air filter would cause such a problem - Ive added air filters to previous cars with no problem whatsoever!
I cant get over to BB Tuning before Saturday so...
For all those people whove got either a HP Induction Kit or Ramair foam filter on their Mk2 172 or Cup, how many of you have had the CO measured, potentially on a rolling road, at high/max revs?
Rumour has it that the car runs lean with this, and other after-market air filter setups, yet BB...
A friend is after a Mk2 Clio 172 leather/alcantara drivers seat, or a complete interior, whichever is cheaper!
Reason - he slid the car into a kerb in the snow and the side airbag went off in the drivers seat, ripping it open! £450+VAT for a new one from Renault....
Anyone recommend a good...
Here here DTWD! There is such a thing as lowering a car -too- much! Everyone seems to want to lower their car to the max, so thats its about 3mm off the ground. Why? Well, I guess its inspired by Touring Cars and the like.....but then these are low for a reason - racing! They have rock hard...
Cupsize/BenR - whoooa! Step back from the heated debate for a second and think about it....I personally reckon that the 172 and Cup have the same ECU. All the measurable differences in performance, in-gear times are purely down to the weight saving in the Cup.
BenR - regarding your comments...
Just got my own 172 Mk2 tested on BB Tuning RR....
Engine Power (measured)...177.3bhp@101mph / 6485 rpm
Engine Power (corrected)...172.6bhp@101mph / 6485 rpm
Wheel Power (measured)...149.4bhp@101mph / 6485 rpm
Torque (corrected)...150lb/ft @ 5459 rpm
Temp was 9 Celcius, and the car has...
Thanks!
Must have been the way I ran the car in! Carefully does it to 600 miles, then an oil change at 1000miles and then a Brands track day where I thrased it!!!
Went over to BBTuning this morning for a power plot for my std import 172 and here are the results:-
Engine Power (measured)...177.3bhp@101mph / 6485 rpm
Engine Power (corrected)...172.6bhp@101mph / 6485 rpm
Wheel Power (measured)...149.4bhp@101mph / 6485 rpm
Torque...
Bear in mind, any rolling road operator can make the RR read -anything- within reason, by adjusting the different parameters. As ever, RRs are only useful for an indication of power.....dynos are far better measures of engine power/torque...
Ill second that!
Jeremy - any chance of a repeat visit to Bedford, maybe with some extended time in the Clio Cup race car and/or a V6 or two to play with (under instruction, of course!). What about a sneak preview of the new V6???
Doing Bedford Autodrome again on 8th March along with a gaggle of different cars, from Astras to Scoobies to F355 Spiders! I -love- Bedford for trackdays cuz you can play with the cars handling to your hearts content!
Roamer - can you quantify subtle i.e. in mms?! Thanks for the comments and Im aware that lowering a car doesnt always improve the handling...I had this drummed into me by a couple of senior Ford suspension experts when I tasked them with making my Fiesta turbo -really- handle, to the point that...
Roamer - we all know RRs can give wildly differeing readouts and youre always at the mercy of the operator! Certainly from other BBs (e.g. ScoobyNet) its a well-known fact that PEs RR outputs are on the optimistic side.
But, the point is, so long as the RR can maintain a consistant result...
paul172cup - how do you find the ride/handling of your Cup with the Apex springs? And how much did it -really- lower the car, bearing in mind the Cup is supposed to be 3mm lower than a std 172...
