I found my current set on ebay slightly used for 140 quid. 195/50 r15, with about 6.8-7 mm of tread. I really like them for road rallying, but keeping the temperature in them on dirty and often wet roads is a bit of a challenge, so next time I would be tempted to go for 120 compound.
I recommend ferodo DS 2500 pads for heavy road use, or Mintex 1144's as a budget alternative. You could get the front calipers from a 172 and put them on, but I wouldn't recommend it, as I honestly don't think you'll be putting enough heat in DS2500's on road use in a 1.2 to need the upgrade...

pro race 1.2's will probably be easier to sell at some point, and if they are lighter, it makes sense to choose them, but I do prefer the look of pro race 3's.

I've got the ktec race mount, and it is pretty noisy, a lot of vibration at certain rpms. If you don't mind noise, however, it is perfect. Also, you can fit a mount yourself, it takes about 30 mins, and is literally 2 bolts. Be sure to get it the correct way up.
I had a misfire around 2800rpm on mine, and I changed the coil and no fix, checked the plugs and they looked fine, tested all the injectors, then bit the bullet and bought a set of magnecor leads from here, and that was what fixed it.
I was being followed up the M40 by a white BMW with fogs and high beams on the entire time (and i was in the slow lane before anyone asks), so I slowed down to force him past, then chased him down with my 100W rally bulbs and Xenon Auxiliary rally lights on for a bit... RIP retinas.

Kwik fit do do some good deals sometimes, although i dont like them either. Some report less tramlining with the 195, and a more responsive drive, but I've not tried 205's on 16 inch rims yet, only on 15's, where I preferred them to 195's on 16's. PS3's are very good though.
Yeah, make sure the plugs are correct. Mine did the same thing, misfired around 2600 under load then stopped. It got worse though, so when it was fixed it was such a relief.
Yeah, with a LSD, on mostly tarmac, there's no real reason 4WD would be overly helpful, especially in the summer stages... Although the mk2 escorts will still be brilliant as always...
Check the plugs if you haven't done so already. Other areas worth a look are the injectors, ECP has them for £40, If you know its not the plugs, just buy one, and swap it round until the misfire goes away. Also, the coil and leads could be shafted if they weren't good quality ones (not accusing...
Worth being careful on ebay, I hear the "mintex" ones are fakes, although it shows you mintex branded packaging in the photo, you actually get unbranded ones. Wouldn't risk it. Sounds almost certainly like your bearings are fooked. You may not feel a wobble when you jack the car as the caliper...
Love the car! What are your thoughts on the 172 cup badge on the bootlid? I'm unsure as to whether to do it on mine or not... Where did you get your shocks from? I need some and I want to use standard cup shocks. Have you considered going to solid top mounts?
For my clio rally car I'm going to do plastic rear windows but leave the fronts glass, it's just a nightmare having plastic on the front, cause if you make the whole window slide up and down it gets scratched, and a slider isn't big enough to hand a timesheet out of, so your codriver has to open...

An LSD is a must if you are dealing with low grip levels, or very slow speed stuff, or rather, an LSD should be far higher on your list of priorities than power if you are doing any of the above.
