F?
H?
J?
44NM?
64NM?
Loosen F?
Don't loosen F?
Loosen H and J?
I've just done the job 5 minutes ago and despite the conflicting statements I can honestly say loosening H and J is the way to go.
2 minutes, all done.
Fred, Edde, thankyou, confusing though it was it was worth it!
Edde, I have heard that you're a genius (and a helpful one at that) I however am a t**t and don't know what you're talking about but would also like to stop the knock under hard, first gear acceleration, could you explain the process a little more clearly please?
Fine report that backs up everybodys problem with the 197 being too slow. The Mini just murders it on acceleration and so would every Sport Clio since the original 172.
Shame really as the chassis appears to be very good.
Burt, the engine hunts at idle, it's normal.
Don't shy away from these things (MK1's that is) find a good one, use the forum and you'll find yourself in an extraordinarily quick little car, brim full of character, bags of fun and not at all bad reliability wise. The engines are bullet proof...
30+ around town?
40+ on a run?
Does anyone else think that these are really fine figures considering the performance of our cars and the manner that they beg to be driven?
Is anyone really pissed off at the lack of care in the parts and servicing industry?
For 50 quid an hour I want a Nasa scientist looking after my car not some spotty, couldn't care less, 17 year old!
I don't really have a '5k kick'.
My car pulls hard from about 2800 rpm until the red line but I rarely take it beyond 5000 as it seems to do it's best work between 2800 and 5500rpm and I'm travelling pretty quickly by then anyway.
I've read that these engines can vary from car to car in how...
So, virtually everyone that takes the time to reply to your question agrees that the 197 is frenetic, slow, underpowered and just not a good enough replacement, yet within two days of posting this thread you tell us that you've ordered a 197.
Why post the thread at all?
You don't sound hard up yet you're posting about minor issues ("as long as I get 5k"). If you're not that bothered just advertise the thing and get rid of it.
It's not as if a new steering wheel nets you another grand!
EVO magazine stated:
"The biggest let-down is the engine, below 5000rpm forget it"
"You continually have to change down when you don't really want to, and sometimes even then it's not enough"
"Second gear out of a hairpin really should be adequate but it never was"
"It isn't a relaxing...
15k is a lot for a car that isn't a stand out.
It's also a nice sum of money for a 'nearly new' performance car.
How about doing a "What should I buy for around 15k" thread.
I bet you get some real food for thought.
Good luck.
Tidyclio, I hate to tell you that you're wrong but...................you're wrong!
No offence (I mean that) but one persons unfortunate, inexplicable scenario cannot justify a general statement concerning a given problem.
In clear and simple terms a clean, slightly lower octane unleaded fuel...
Lovely post Chris, a pleasure to read and very patiently and clearly put.
I do however have an issue concerning your statements.
The bottom line is that my Clio, my buddies Clio, My Cooper S, My WRX and almost everybody elses Clio will run noticeably quicker on 98 octane than on the lower...
Pete, your engine will not be knackered and your catalytic converter will be 100% fine.
Had you been using leaded petrol or diesel (both highly unlikely scenarios) then you could have caused major damage straight away but you have been using the correct 'type' of fuel, just a slightly...
Pete, the car will be fine and it will now run much better with 2 or three tanks of Vpower and a few more miles under its wheels.
The ECU will have made the necessary adjustments during the 'low octane' period and will also sense the higher octane fuel that you are now using and reward you...
