Aahh, now I'm with you, I don't have it on my computer, I have the magazines.
The 182 road test is still on Autocars website as it's more recent.
The only way you will get the original 172 test (MK1 and Mk2) is from Autocar or if someone can scan it for you.
Road test reprints only cost...
This test is not available online, only the 182 onwards so you'll have to pay I'm afraid. Go to,
www.autocar.co.uk
or
www.haymarketsubs.co.uk
or
08456 777816 ask for road test reprints and back issues.
If all else fails PM me and I'll send it to you.
It'll be coming from New...
Anyone who has driven a car with an oil temp guage will tell you that oil takes a lot longer to warm up than water. Typically, water temp will settle after after around 3 miles (depending on ambient temp), oil can take a full 10 miles and for all engine internals to reach optimum operating temp...
Gaz, you have 'Fiat coupe 20v' listed as your car and you admit you've never owned one!
You ask the 'point' of the Trophy and antagonise those with the respect to answer and you write inane rubbish about anything you choose.
Do you own a car 'Gaz'?
Have you ever owned a car?
Are you 12?
Autocar's first test of a MK1 172 showed a 0-100mph of 17 secs (well run in car on 98 octane fuel).
A subsequent full test on UK soil with a very low mileage example running 95 octane showed a 0-100mph time of 24 seconds!
7 seconds difference and a subjective sloth compared to the '98...
Put 2 tanks full of 98 octane in it, run it low on the second tank and fill it half way on the 3rd fill and see the difference.
My Clio is so fast on 98 that even after three months I still can't quite believe it.
Whereas on 91 octane (our lower grade fuel in New Zealand) it feels like I've...
Don't analyse it to death as there's not a bad car among them.
In simple terms the Trophy is best (the suspension is extraordinary), the MK1 is purest and everything else is in between.
They all go like the clappers and most of them fall to bits.
Hope this helps!
Mr Birkett, I normally find that we think fairly similarly but on this occasion I disagree.
Firstly the Aygo weighs almost 900kgs.
Secondly, it is a tiny, basic car with a 1 litre engine, tiny wheels and tyres and a weedy chassis.
To replace a 1 litre engine with a 2 litre (surely the...
I drove a version 9 Impreza WRX STI last week (this version is known for low lag and great response) and much as it would eat my 172 alive when on boost the typical low rev lethargy was still there and made it feel initially much slower, blunter and less fun.
Mr Birkett is right, overcoming...
So why is the Civic type R so much quicker then?
It has 144lbft of torque to the 197's 155lbft. Enough extra to offset the small weight difference.
If the 197 had the same sprinting ability as a CTR we would all be happy.
And going by the weight and torque figures it should have.
But it...
Independent tested weight of the 197 is 1275kgs and although I have heard that Renault has reverted to quoting 'BHP' instead of 'PS' nobody has confirmed this. Thus my quoted figure of 194 bhp stands open to correction.
The performance point also still stands that given the very similar quoted...
You're quite right Roy, the reality is that the figures don't add up. 194bhp in a hatch of this weight (1275kgs) vs the Civic typeR (1204kgs) shouldn't show the disparity that they do in terms of performance figures.
The Honda annhialates the 197 and it shouldn't be the case. Renault even...
The 197's gearing is already packed as tightly as Renault dared take it. It'll still hit 60mph in 2nd (for the all important single gearchange/time saving thing) but the rest of the gears are set very low and close to try and offset the torque deficit as much as possible.
The bottom line is...
I know they're great Bill, I love mine, it was your over enthusiastic waxing that made it irrisitible to quote your post.
No wonder nothing gets by you, I reckon your enthusiasm alone is worth 5 seconds a lap!
Good on ya mate, have fun.
If you want to abuse the absolute hell out of your V6 then rev the nuts off of it, pop the the clutch and I'm sure it will do a doughnut for you.
Alternatively, buy a cheap 80's rear driver and save yourself 15k.
Youtube has a video of a Clio V6 doing doughnuts and it's not...
New wipers will solve it then.
I would give the screen a really, really good clean first. Those screen polishers/sovents/coatings can last months and might look good but they can really screw up the wiper cleaning process.
