Sounds like a headgasket on what you have said, not that uncommon on the smaller engines. It may have been a fairly cheapish(few hundred) quid fix if you had spotted it sooner but there may significant engine damage if the engine has overheated. I assume you stopped the car when it told you to?

the thing that annoys me is it states full service history which suggests regular and on time, then goes on to list that there was over 25,000 and 33,000 miles between recorded services. FFS!

So how much extra time would it take to change the oil pump? Is it just a case of lifting the engine as far as the loose mounts allow and swapping the pump over?

I think if you want to change it round you can, but you need to file down the keyway so the wheel will locate wherever you put it. It isn't dangerous as you still have all the other splines holding the wheel but it is a bit of a bodge.
