The thing I dont understand is how it can be such a disappointing performer. I mean, what are the stats for the std GTi? - despite its less than class standard bhp output, I thought it was actually a reasonable performer. I guessed that the 180 would be late 6s/early 7s to 60 but apparently not
Its not an "argument" Neil. Its a very valid point...........do you drive around the whole time with your revs poised in the upper rev range where we all know the RenaultSport 2.0 16v gives out most of its power. I certainly dont. If something decided it wanted to race, Id often have to drop a...
I bet the Ibiza doesnt have to think what gear he needs to be in as much though. If you were both in 3rd at 2000rpm, hed pull from you no problem. But if you were both driving them how they need to be driven to get best performance, youll win because the Cup is lighter and has a better power to...
Power to weight ratio is more key IMO
Like Ben H said, 16v/VTS dont have much torque and are still quick and thats down to weight.
So I think the comment was a bit generalised. Yes torque is very important, being the ability to produce the power (turning force) but that doesnt help you all...
No problem Rockport.......give them a couple of weeks and Im sure theyll do another hot hatch shootout (in a bit more detail than this review) between the GTi 180, 172, CTR and Cooper S. Doubt it will be the Cup as its too underspecced compared to the above so not comparable.
Good edition of...
Seems Autocar were less restrained with their comments!!
Also Auto Express top story this week is on the new Clio (on sale next year they say). Initially with 75bhp 1.2, 98bhp 1.4 and 110bhp 1.6, plus the 65 and 85bhp dCi. They say the RenaultSport 2.0 will appear later with "as much as...
...and to be honest, they dont sound overly impressed. For those that havent read it, here are a few choice quotes and curiously they only list the 0-60 as 7.9??? - but then again we all know about listed 0-60s vs reality. It does look pretty nice though:
The 12Nm hike in torque has improved...
Auto Glym Super Resin has always been a favourite, but if the paintwork is dulling slightly, then colour magic is brilliant (followed by some super resin polish).
Saw BB performance tuning now do these for the 172/Cup - as in just the replacement filter element.
Worthwhile people? Im looking for an excuse to spend money at the moment but I think it could just be a waste. Does a filter element really do anything? Im a little dubious of full induction...
Ah yes, sorry - forgot there were 2. Just looked up the kerb weight of the Tipo - the standard 2.0 litre n/a one was about 1150/1200kg, so I guess thats what it would be with the 2.0 turbo in (roughly), so youre probably right Craggy. The 136bhp engine probably wouldnt have enough steam to carry...
You sure?.......the Tipo is such a flimsy piece of Italian engineering that it probably weighs the same as a pack of fags. If it had a 220bhp turbo engine in it, it would wipe the floor with a 172 and then come back for afters.
I still reckon it could be the 1.4 Turbo.
Probably had the Uno or Punto Turbo engine in it. If its the Punto, then its 130-6bhp (depending on version) and a whopping 18.8psi (at overboost) turbo. Tipos might be bricks but Id imagine they arent very heavy??
the Renault CD/MP3 player upgrade (Sony CDX-MP70)?
I know a lot of people slated Sony in the main thread. Are they really THAT bad? Bearing in mind Im not really into ICE at all. I just want a head unit that looks pretty good and has MP3 functionality and sounds as good or better than my...
Personal choice Andy - dont ask for peoples opinion, youll stir a hornets nest!! Loads of people chose the 172 for the luxury and loads choose the Cup for a real race focused car without all the luxuries that the modern driver usually requires.
The thing that makes me laugh is that when 172 owners defend against some of the comments made about Cups being soooo much faster, you get an impression that people are thinking that 172 owners are jealous! However, any 172 owner could have a Cup!! - they are cheaper, so an informed decision has...
Where do you get the "more torque" crap from??
Its the SAME engine. I have both brochures here from when I was looking at them both (yes, I could have got a Cup but chose not to, so theres no jealousy involved) and they show the same power and torque produced at exactly the same point. 172 @...
Re: that video - it was actually the 172 that faired better against the Impreza than the Cup! Video was 2 parts - first car was the Cup, 2nd was the blue 172 and if my eyes dont deceive me (got the video here), Id say the Impreza pulled a better distance from the Cup.
Not that Im saying a 172...
I think the Rallye (to the GTI-6 what the Cup is to the 172) is about 7 to 60, so add a bit on to that, and its a GTI-6. I always thought they were about 7.5 ish.
