cracking is usualy due to the rear/centre exhaust mount rubbers sagging and putting extra strain on specific parts of the exhaust.

Yep mine creaks, either on a hot day or when i've been in a slow moving traffic jam where i've been on and off the clutch alot. mine is on 42k I dont think there is any confirmed cure for this problem yet.

I believe the springs are there purely for engine movement under acceleration, not vibrations!

The Engine movement on Idle in most 182's is ridiculous so putting a near to solid exhaust mount on would increase vibration throughout the car ten fold I would imagine.
