Oils - Viscosity Loss, an explanation

It depends on the quality of basestocks used, not all synthetics are synthetic, some are "hydrocracked" petroleum oils. Cheers Simon

Oils - Viscosity Loss, an explanation

It depends on the quality. If they have identical composition then there will be no difference. 5w flows more quickly when you turn the key in any temperature and therefore less engine wear. 90% of wear occurs on cold start. Cheers Simon

Oils - Viscosity Loss, an explanation

Why do oils lose viscosity with use? Viscosity Index Improvers. An oils viscosity will decrease as the engine temperature rises. Viscosity Index Improvers are added to reduce this thinning. They are a key addative in the production of multigrade oils. VI Improvers are heat sensitive...

    Best oil for a 172

The Silkolene PRO S 5w-40 would be my choice at £39.99 for 5L and it will last 12000 miles. The Motul 300V is also an excellent oil but a little dearer. Just email me for a price list: mailto:sales@opieoils.co.uk">sales@opieoils.co.uk Cheers Simon

Are synthetics really better and why.....

I thought this would be of interest as Its probably the question I get asked the most. Shame the answer isnt simple though! The basic benefits are as follows: Extended oil drain periods Better wear protection and therefore extended engine life Most synthetics give better MPG They flow...

Don’t ask oil questions - look here!

Its not uncommon for OEMs to give the same recommended oils for a range of cars as this is what they are tested on and it keeps things simple. 10w-40 semi-synthetic is in effect a minimum standard or adequate oil. 5w-40 being synthetic is always the best option unless the engine is in a...

This post of mine should have been "stuck" first time around, pehaps an admin will do it now. Please? These are the recommended grades for standard cars in a normal road use situation. If this does not apply to you because the car is modded or used on the track than read my comments. Petrol...

    Oil Viscosity, A common misconception!

TBH, Suabaru recommend 5w-30 and 5w-40 for later models 2000 onwards and we recommend a fully synthetic 5w-40 in these cases. Earlier models tend to prefer 10w-40 or 10w-50. Depending on the state of modification, there may be a case for thicker oils but if your oil temps dont exceed 120degC...

    Oil Viscosity, A common misconception!

I read on many forums about 0w and 5w oils being too thin. I will try to explain it without getting over technical and well go from there. 0w-40, 5w-40, 10w-40 and 15w-40 are all the same thickness (14cst) at 100degC. Centistokes (cst) is the measure of a fluids resistance to flow...

    which oil

Why 5w-40? Because, it has better cold start than 10w, 15w etc meaning less engine wear and it still protects as an sae 40 at 100degC. Its synthetic an none of this hydrocracked rubbish and therefore stays in grade longer meaning longer drain intervals. And, Renault now recommend it for...

    oil.............again......sorry

Of course you can use 0w-40, it has the same viscosity as 5w-40 at 100degC and flows better when cold. M1 is a proper pao synthetic and better then the Elf quality wise. Cheers, Simon
