Car now back to normal, replaced the alternator on Sunday.
I have served many years in the motor trade and can honestly say that this was possibly the worst experience in 20 years doing this normally routine job because of limited space and bad design.
Firstly is likey just to be cylinder head rebuild and not a new engine so get some quotes from a local independant garage. Secondly theres one on e bay just now.
There seems to be a common fault with the alternators on these vehicles although Renault are refusing to accept this. I have 172 which was producing a strong smell of electrical burning coming from the alternator which has now given up the ghost. At a guess I think it is overcharging and the...
Also meant to add it has a slight "whirring" belt type noise but the smell is that of electrical burning and not rubber suggesting possibility of the alternator bearing maybe?
I have a 53 plate 172 and noticed a strong electrical burning smell yesterday whilst driving . It seems to be coming from the front offside and was wondering could it be the alternator?
I notice it constantly and so far the charge light is going out after start up with full electrical load...
I bought one from e bay it was from a 182 and it looked identical to the one in my 2003 172 but they are not compatible yet the plugs seem the same.
The one you need should say "tuner list "on the bottom right hand side
I have found a couple of new renault rear shocks for sale on e bay and was wondering if anyone knows the right part numbers for a 53 plate 172 as there are two people selling with different part numbers.
My money is on the thermostat. Dont check it, replace it as they are pennies.
As for the fan ,bridge out the two wires on the loom going to the fan thermo switch and this should activate the fan (ign on). Failing that check for voltage and continuity and of course nearly forgot ....the fuse.
Yes replacing both was kind of taken as read guys but I need to source them first if anyone has any ideas, or do I have to grow a beard and go into Arnie Clark which sends my blood pressure through the roof cos they are rip off b******s.
I have 53 plate 172 which has done 13000 miles and already one of the rear dampers has given up the ghost.
Not wanting to go to the dealer as they are s**t I tried the local motor factor who only list one damper for all the clios. Is this correct?
