    This depends on the year as the older ones had tapered rear bearings.

    I had this and it was my alternator bearings. Have a listen using a long screwdriver (handle to your ear and pointy bit on alternator)

    Also check the front springs as both of mine were broke and caused this knock/rattle as the broken bit remained and was jingling (is that a word) against the strut.

    Its all down to personal choice which is good, it is a free market. I would personally rather wash my own car and having served my time in a main dealership many years ago I wouldnt want someone else driving it. I can also see no reason for dealers being competitive in the labour rates.

    Because it is a condition of their franchise. Just because a customer buys a car from them they do not have rights of service and neither they should. They should be looking to their pricing structure and customer care if people are going elsewhere for service work.

    It may well be good practice if required but on standard springs and dampers its not necessary as the thread on the top of the damper protudes without any compression on the spring.

    You wont need coil spring clamps on the 172 just pull the damper out as far as it will go and re assemble the top mount.
