Beams are same width, its the 172 cup stub axles that are 5mm thinner to account for the rim offset.
Only difference on the later beams is the extra plating underneath the stub axle pickups. Bar thickness is the same throughout.
Clio box requires sexual stick play - borderline rapey, sounds like you're doing it wrong.
Failing that is the small white bush inside the gearbox casing worn? If you replace it make sure you relocate the cir-clip properly.

Let me elaborate. Drill out the plastic bolt to remove any plastic swarf & expose the 'existing' hole. Tap. Done.
Even adding a couple of mil depth to an 'existing' hole isn't going to make the wheel...
Here's a crazy thought - couldn't you just drill out the holes, tap them & fit bolts of your choice?
