I had a cup, if it's well specced the only thing your missing is climate, powered mirrors, colour coded bump strips and a soft touch dash. All the other things on an r27 like climate, xenons were also options... So you can still get an r27 with cheapie headlights and manual AC You also can't...

Not driven a GTi, but I had a MK5 R32, and its build left a lot to be desired. Felt dated too.

still look for a decent 197, or a magane R26 imo. They have more about them than a VXR in terms of 'feel'

Yeah, but dont let that put you off. I've had two 197's, the last one 5 years, the one before for three, and covered around 80k in total. Had a box change in the last one i owned @ around 50k. Do the checks that knuckles said, make sure it shifts cleanly above 5k, if it does, happy days :)...

Heatshield? They don't usually have any common problems on the exhaust other than the flexies, but that's usually indicated by a blow. I have heard of the odd secondary cat issue..? Revs, they are FBW, but no different to a pahse 2 1*2 imo

fuel pump would be my punt I had one just die whilst driving, just cut out, had to get a tow home :( Its a reasonably common issue and will also give your symptoms.
