Btw, I hope all those of you wanting to use it for XMBC have all your content in simple x264 containers?

    Raspberry Pi

Yep, allows us ultimate flexibility, we can manufacture stuff just in time if we need to. Our current machine will place about 16,000 components an hour but due to its age is only able to place down to 0603. The stuff we (design and) make is fairly complex, for example we have one board that...

Electronic component lead times are mental. We had a lead time of 9 months on a processor we use.

Ahhh....I'll let you off then! Our new pick and place machine (ordered yesterday!) can place 01005 components (that's 0.2mm by 0.1mm), which is spectacular.

    Magnet against iPhone/iPod

The power supply in it has inductors in it. Putting a strong magnetic field near it may cause the power supply to collapse (the device will reset).

That'll be bonjour. It'll also be talking to anything else that uses mDNS for service discovery.

    iOS "must have" apps

I use remoter for remote access, I've tried a few different clients and remoter is the best imo. Supports VNC (and VNC+Apple Remote Desktop extensions), VNC over ssh tunnel, RDP, RDP over ssh tunnel. Also has a mac & windows app which you can install which allows "zero config" remote...

    Vodafone SIM problem

Ended up sending a second SIM by courier to Israel, f**k knows where the first one has gone. The irritating thing is that the first SIM we was sent a week ago, and the bug in the modem will probably take them 2 minutes to fix. (you can make the sims work, but you have to insert a working sim...

    Vodafone SIM problem

I think there's somebody here who works for vodafone who might be able to help. Basically, we develop embedded devices of which some use a phone module to allow the equipment to be contacted by text message or over the internet. Vodafone have started supplying SIM's that don't work with our...

UK Student faces US trial (TV Shack)

Loving the comparisons to google! The fact of the matter was, he knew exactly what he was doing, he specifically provided links to pirated stuff. Guilty. The problem I have is with our "special relationship" with the U S of A. Had this been an American doing this, there's no f**king way the...

How would I "Show" the audio quality difference between 196k and a FLAC (800+) file?

FFT. Take both versions of the file, pick (the same smallish section - a couple of seconds) in both and perform an FFT. This will give you a histogram which shows the frequency bands in both sections. The difference between the two files should be pretty obvious.

    Raspberry Pi

The CPU is covered by a whole load of NDA's. The accelerated graphics are provided through binary only blobs and the 1080p demonstrations are obviously tailored to what the graphics core provides native decoding for and therefore the CPU won't have been involved much. It boots directly from SD...

    iPhones and Bluetooth.

They actually support much more than that, but they only ever discover devices that report that they are hands free device class. The profiles themselves are separate to the advertised device class, Bluetooth is very weird. Despite this, if say you (thoretically) discovered that the iPhone...

    Possible Time Machine Error?

Time machine is s**t. Early time capsules were prone to hardware failure. All time capsules are prone to corruptions because they use time machine for backing up. Nice idea, poor execution.

    Possible Time Machine Error?

I've covered this a million times here, the way that time machine backs up (sparse bundle over afp) is really not very clever at all. It supposedly has extensions to ensure reliability, but due to the way it works, it's still very possible to see corruptions. I wouldn't trust just a time...

    Possible Time Machine Error?

Welcome to the world of time machine corruptions. You'll probably find (if you're lucky) that you can still mount the time machine image. You might be able to use disk utility to repair it, but I'd cut my losses and start a new backup.

Going from Sky TV to Virgin - Thoughts

TiVo app has been updated (you'll need to switch stores to see the update) and it now supports getting the channel logos from the box and now searching now works without crashing the app.

Best Android app for 0-60? Also info on TomTom One...

The accelerometer will produce more accurate results with respect to time, but a bigger error when it comes to calculating speed. (you integrate the force, but because it's 3 dimensional and it shifts during gear changes, it's not constant) The GPS will produce more accurate results for speed...

Going from Sky TV to Virgin - Thoughts

For anybody interested, I wrote a real application that uses Apple's bonjour library and it seems to work a lot better, people seem to be having a lot more luck with it. If you want it, you can download it from here: Mac: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/24518476/bonjourvm-mac-binaries.dmg Windows...

Going from Sky TV to Virgin - Thoughts

I'm out at the moment, but: If you go to cableforum and look the virginmedia section you'll see a thread that is about the iPad app. I modified the script so that it makes it searches for your tivos and then creates the fake vm TiVo bonjour services, it works fine for me and others have it...

    Revised MacBook Air.

We bought 2 13" air machines a month or so back at work and they're awesome. I have to lug a 13" MacBook pro round with me and it gets heavy really quick. Given the choice, I'd take the air every single time.
