You shouldn't pay for it if it's still under warranty, take it to another Renault dealer. It could be some thing to do with the brake switch, as it is common for them to fail, but you normally get the ABS light also.

You only get big gains with Turbos. Your looking around £250 - £350, but you only get around 5bhp top end and around 12bhp mid-range for a 172.

^^^Sounds like it. Your probably better off changing the lower suspension arm, if you know which side it's coming from.
