^ don't let that put you off, some things will "just work". Others may need a small amount of reading to get to work. But once you have it working that's it, not like you'll have to keep"fiddling".
I don't think anyone could categorically say XYZ is the best distro, but Ubuntu is very good.
I've been running Ubuntu since 2005, currently using 7.10 Tribe 5 Testing and it's looking good. Some good improvements over 7.04.
Have you read about the movie pirate ordered by a court to use Windows because they haven't got any monitoring software for Linux? lol

I've always based mine on games i.e. if my favourite game will play with high to max settings then it's all good.
A screen full of figures doesn't seem to mean much. You could have a low benchmark compared to thousands of other people, yet your machine does everything you need it to in a quick...
I think free installation is an offer they do now and again. I know when we joined we didn't pay a penny for installation or box.
The standard box is free but if your mum wants a + or HD one then she'll have to pay.
It won't run slow due to having a lot of music, videos etc.
It will be running slower than when you first got it because your operating system will be bogged down with crap. Hardware doesn't decide to slow down with time.
It's been a while, I dug one of my old TFT's out of the cupboard and thought I'd try a dual setup.
I'm now running 2960x1050. (22" widescreen + 17")
