yes or just ~/NVIDIA-Linux-x86-100.14.11-pkg1.run
To make it easier you could rename the file to something shorter e.g. NVIDIA.run

GRUB is the bootloader (GRand Unified Bootloader)
Don't worry about reinstalling. When I first started out, the ubuntu CD was permanently in my drive lol
Shouldn't have failed, only thing I can think is the package didn't support 8800gts, but then I wouldn't have expected it to be listed in the restricted drivers manager.
To get back into a GUI you'd have to reboot, press ESCAPE when prompted by GRUB.
Choose the second option - safe or whatever...
I'm not sure if the ubuntu nvidia drivers package supports the 8800gts or not, hopefully it does as that's the easiest way to install it.
Go to System -> Administration -> Restricted Drivers Manager

My offer still stands of posting you a 7.04 CD - no costs involved.
Your problems aren't ubuntu related.
Look, pm me your address and I'll send you 7.04 on CD, that way we can rule out dodgy ISO's, bad burns and dodgy media.
Did your burning app (was it nero?) check the checksum? If that was ok then the burn or media must have been dodgy in which case reburn to a different disc.
If the checksum didn't checkout then you need to download the ISO again.

Not exactly 8Mb but it will do me fine, a lot better than 2Mb.
Well chuffed!!
As some may remember, I chose to upgrade my 2Mb Pipex to their "upto" 8Mb Pipex last year, after many delays it finally took place in January, however despite my modem syncing at 8Mb, I could still only download at 2Mb.
After many phone calls and letters that never got replied to, I gave up and...
