No optical input would put me off but you might not be so bothered.

Attenuation is affected by many more aspects than distance alone. You could live in the flat above the exchange and have a higher dB reading than someone a mile down the street.
If you crashed and made a claim and they asked to see proof of your occupation then you're fcuked, left with no car and most likely be prosecuted.

Nobody really wants CRT's these days and the tower components aren't worth much at all.

There will be a BT line into his house (Unless he lives in Hull). The charge he's referring to is the connection fee, not an installation fee (although they often term it that way).
