1. get under the car mid section where the gear linkage sticks out 4 x 10mm bolts undo them and the 13mm that holds the linkages together. then undo the 4 13mm bolts that hold the whole thing in the car.
2. inside the car undo the gaiter and pull the surround over the stick . the stick should be...
1. clio 1.9 derv battery or bosch silver equivalent
2. find an alternator re-ferb place and ask them to recoil yours to a higher ampage they will re-coil it and fit a slightly smaller pully all for around £50
so you can get more electric there for under a ton
its the same .... you need the whole stick from where it attaches to the linkage under the car its all one unit. if your buying second hand or from a breakers make sure the plasic collar that allows you to select reverse is broken (if you life up the gator you can see the collar)

as sean said it can be the loom , near the top of the ECU it has a cage and this cuts through the wiring loom.
could also be faulty coil pack or throttle postition sensor but that means a new throttle body ££
