I did go for them in the end. well impressed with the sound and build quality of them. the volume buttons dont work but theres a app for android that lets you use the middle button for many things such as 1 click pause, 2 clicks skip and so forth

Sorry that's not my phone and not miui LOL that is the spb launcher on the market for a Tenner but free on Google. If you head over to xda developers and find your phone in the forums there will be many guides. I wouldn't like to say how purely because everyphone has different rooting methods...

could you not just tape the end of a interchangable head and put a pin though it 3 times or would that not work

I use miui and have the phone clocked to 1.8ghz (desire HD) very stable and the battery has lasted 10 hours only using 25% (never had it unplugged for longer) androids once rooted EVERYTHING can be customized with a bit of code. atm my homescreen looks like this...
