Thanks for the links, some great pics on the flickr site. I came to the same conclusion, performance seems similar, price is a lot less and I'd rather have the facility to have 10-12 zoom than 20-24... I might have a visit to Kea Photo later :D
I've managed to do 18,000 miles in my 172 in the last 12 months, mainly round the north west, without anyone spotting me :(
I'm going to park my car in the middle of Bridgefoot tomorrow :rasp:
There is a good comparison in this article:

For your first DSLR I don't think you need worry about the difference in specs, there's nowt significant from a beginners point of view.
You might find you need an external flash for the boxing shots as...
Nikon D40/D50/D70/D70s/D80
Canon 300D/350D/400D/10D/20D
you will need a macro lens to go with the camera body if it's mainly close-up work that you will be doing.
Some of the member galleries have non-car pics in so it must be ok I think. I'll get a gallery on there myself sometime and put some of my landscape stuff in it as well as that pic of my car on Honister Pass that I've posted on the forum 462 times.
If it's the shutter speed you are wanting to alter (while letting the camera sort the aperture) it should be in S mode if you have one.
Check your ISO/ASA as well, on grim days like today you'll need 400 at least - if it's on eg 100 then you'll struggle to get any light in the pic at 160th.
Assuming you have a appropriate lens on the DSLR... I found I got better shots at gigs with my Olympus compact camera that with a Nikon D70 with the standard 18-70 lens on.
The Fuji F20/30 models are supposed to be very good in low light...
Approx £230 + £30 p & p from Kea Photo in HK. They have an ebay shop... I've had stuff from them before and they deliver faster than it takes my local Jessops to get things in stock. I read a group test of 10-20/12-24 lenses last month and the Sigma came out top, seems like a very good lens.
What has age got to do with it?!! At least at 31 you've probably got a fair bit of driving experience so will be less likely to post a "I've crashed my Clio I was only doing 23mph honest" threads that appear here nearly every day!
