Transverse means sideways ie FWD - driveshaft coming from either side to power front wheels. Same as clio 172. Longitudinal engines are usually rear wheel drive ( some are front ) these have a gearbox fitted to the rear of the lump with a prop shaft and rear axle powering the rear wheels.

This was the TT previous to the VAG conversion - it was basically a 1.2 with 172 cup running gear - 13.5's with gas was easy

best i ran was a 13.5 @ 106 mph with a 50 shot of gas / cams / R-sport ECU and gas flowed inlet manifold. That was 3 years ago when i had the 172 engine fitted in the sleeper
