It's a very common problem and I'd place a large wager that it's happened on almost every 172 out there. I could be wrong but I seem to recall the proper fix was a bumper off job. As a result most people just left them broken.

Not really.. The GTX will probably be the "loudest" thing. By the look of it the case fans are Akasa (which are VERY quiet) and the Zalman won't be that loud.

Other way around maybe. The GT's use the new 65nm technology so use less power and run cooler than the older GTX's. I can't see why anyone would consider the GTX over the GT given there's hardly any performance difference at all and the GTX cost's another £100+.

It "shouldn't" make a lot of difference. I guess the obvious suggestion would be to place the router near a window in the outbuilding if possible. Either that or he buys 50m of Cat5 or signs up for a second ISP for the main house.

Rangemax (or equivalent) should be fine at 50m (providing there's not a forest in the way).
