From what I've read it was just a rumour that someone got wrong about Direct X 9 L which was supposedly DX10 for XP, however Direct X 9L was just the code name for what is actually Direct X 9.0EX which is a Vista only technology.
You should find that you have a choice been an irc style that updates automatically with nicknames down the side and an old school style that updates when the browser is refreshed.
Personally I use a Tiny Portal front end and use the built in old school type. I tried the auto updating irc style...

It's Ubuntu but it uses the XFCE desktop as opposed to the GNOME desktop that Ubuntu uses. XFCE is lighter weight than GNOME, so should run a lot quicker for you.
My mum is absolutely clueless. If she accidentally deleted a shortcut on her desktop she would immediately panic that she had just lost all her work and she would have to open every single file she had ever saved to make sure it was still there.

I know someone who bought their laptop from pc world and has a warranty.
