Same thing happened to me when I had a GrpN ECU installed. 172's with cruise are a bit of an odd ball. I think mine may have had a 182 ECU in it lol.

Like most preofessional programs, it does just sort of sit there and wait for you to do something, although I've found as the software has evolved it has become more amatuer friendly (red eye removal tool is a good example of this). I learnt the bits I know by basically f**king about with it...

Tripod, remote or time delay firing of the shutter helps towards eliminating camera movement. Honeslty stick it in manual or apeture priority (Av) and have a play. Remember what you see in the viewfinder gives you no indication of the images exposure.
