OS X does applications the correct way round, they're special folders called "bundles". (Risc OS also used this approach in 1987). Basically, the application stores all it's code and support files inside that folder...anything else inside the DMG is fluff.

Leave it outside for 15 minutes turned on. Around here it definitely doesn't appear to be using AGPS to locate the satellites, so it takes a while to first fix.
Get a reader that has firmware that works.
SDHC cards have a slightly different initialisation sequence to SD cards and won't initialise with the standard SD sequence.
Lets hope it doesn't break otherwise I foresee "The dazsters big trip to the regent street apple store" for a replacement! :p

You'll need to turn on SMTP authentication to use your ISP's SMTP server...assuming they allow that.
pop3 is incoming only, so it'll only ever receive! lol.
Mac or PC? I had this when I tried iTunes at work, but restarting iTunes solved it.
As an aside, perform a restore as well on the phone as there is a later build of firmware than they ship with, but if you do a "check for update" it will tell you that you are already running the latest...

Old iPod chargers were firewire cable based, so they definately won't work with the 3G, just checking that he's using the charger he thinks he is!
