SSL is basically what I.E, Firefox etc uses when you log-in to your on-line banking for example.
A 3rd party (ISP) can see what's being transferred but due to the encryption it will looks like gibberish to them.

They're pointless. All they do is look up your details on a generic database and make a guess from that. A database can't tell you your actual loop length, it can't tell you if there's any aluminium in your line, it can't tell you the physical state of your line and so on. At best it will know...

Defaults at 5-5-5-15 iirc.. Never messed with timings before so a bit reluctant in case I c**k something up.

The resolution on 19" widescreens is normally fairly pants, something like 1440*900, so go for a 20.1" or 22" instead. Or even larger if the budget extends that far.
