Re: accoustic valve, The ECU has no way of knowing if the acoustic valve is there or not. The vacuum hose that operates on manifold pressure is the only vague connection to the block IIRC

For a start give all the fluid tank caps a tweak, make sure they are screwed down nice and tight.

yup same across the range. Get them on ebay for £20-30 all intact. Easiest way to change them is from under the car, peel back the tray under the corner you need to change and have a fiddle, 15min job max.

whats the car? there have been a few 197 steering rack related problems on here recently some even had them replaced on warranty IIRC, might be worth doing a search.

Ah, you would probably loose that if you flashed the ECU, so maybe just stick with the OEM map rewrite & see if that helps. Beyond that I would speak with Henk as it does sound ECU related due to the fact it pulls happy as larry up to the limiter.

I'm sure Henk would be able to send you a copy of the base software & the standard map; it would almost certainly be worth sending him the readouts as he might be able to spot something we can't. Other than that there is always Renault :quiet:
