I've never liked the Res games either, but 4 is nothing like the rest of the series, you should give it a go mate. The PS2 version is almost as good, but comes with some extras to make up for it's low quality visuals compared to the cube version.

That depends on whether the cut scenes use game engine and locations or whether they are totally pre rendered.

Yup, I traded my 172 Import in and got roughly £1k less than if it had been a UK car, but I did save a lot more than that buying it so it worked out well.
