Personally I would go for the new head unit option. Improving your sound quality, as well as getting Bluetooth hands free/audio streaming, and iPod, and aux, and USB (depending on what you want to pay for, my Sony MEX-BT3600u had all of the above).

Drive at 30mph. Put the car in third. Check RPM. Then put the car in 5th. Check RPM again.
Other than your throttle sticking or you not actually having anything to engage in 5th, I can't see any reason why you'd get silly RPM. Even if the clutch was shot you'd still notice some slipping in 4th.
Yup, take the Ford RS 200. Yeah, it made 440bhp, but it only made 489nm of torque (not that that's particularly small!), and the modern cars are better handling too - definitely not tame!
