I had a mint valver ages ago, I looked into getting a 172 or a 172 cup, decided that the 'step up' wasn't great enough, so bought a fiat coupe 20vt, good times !
Some cars came with factory fitted kits on them, the majority were fitted afterwards though, having said that, they are very rare.
There were also about 16 or so factory Dimma'd Williams !
Engine wise, i'm almost certain they were standard.
A normal service isn't that pricey imo, insurance for me is sub £700 so not bad all, tax is £210 for a year (at the min)
People who buy them don't expect them to be cheap to run by any means. Those who get one & can't afford the up keep of it either just make do, or sell it.
They are oldskool so I guess that's why. The one thing I never liked about them was the big boot spoiler, it looks nasty.
Back in the day they were the shizz !!
