I bought the PS3 solely for GT5 and after that flop it just became a Blu-Ray player, I'm never going to touch PS / GT* again. Forza is getting too commercial and losing its focus for me, but thankfully it can be tweaked to take some of the junk away.

Mine is setup in the bedroom also (my missus uses the main TV in the living room every night) and it would be pointless having an Xbox as I'd never get to use it. I play sitting on the bed and the TV is mounted on the wall, it works perfectly well.

On the home screen of the Xbox, highlight (position yourself over) Forza, press what was the start button on the controller (now the Menu button) go into addons. My car pack was already installed.

Have a look in your messages, I don't know about day one cars (I've not seen any) but special edition cars appear in messages when redeemed.

You have to go into your messages and get them in there.

It certainly exhausts a fair amount of heat. I wouldn't describe it as light myself, it still weighs some. It HAS to be used horizontally, you can have it vertical but that isn't recommended by Microsoft.

Plugged Virgin in, controls that actually work seem minimal (mute, go to tv etc) not much beyond that. Also, it seems if the Xbox isn't on you can't use Virgin by itself, but that was before configuring the Xbox and this is all without having read / researched anything so I could be doing things...
