Might be worth breaking it for spares. Your going to be a couple of grand down unfortunately. Puts me off buying a 172 tbh but I supose could happen to any car.
Your right there mate. I would only buy one with FSH inc belts within the last 2 years, good condition etc. I supose the belts would depend on price i.e. I wouldn't go over say £2500 for one that needs belts very soon i.e. a year.
Some reps are realy nice. Could always progress to an engine conversion when you hit 19ish. In the end you will end up with a car that is essentially an expensive 172 however you have had the fun of building it up slowly etc.
