My advise is, if it works most of the time then take it elsewhere for an MOT, cause if the lights work at the time of the test it will pass OK.
Any MOT garage can carry out an MOT test on any car .
Easy to do, get yerself a flatblade screwdriver and use it to lever the IR reciever lens towards the back of the car, the lens will clip off, then you can prise out the rest of it, just be careful not to damage the circuit board.
Note: If you get the lens out and it looks all dry inside then...
You need to try and remove item number 3, it clips out and has one electrical block connector on it

Look up inside the car at the infra red key reciever, see if you can pop it down, I recon its got a load of water in it from a leaky roof aireal.
Dry it out refit, should sort it if its that.
You will need to remove roof aireal later on and put a bit of sealer around the...
I recon its down to the dealer, I know at my place women get treated the same as anyone else.
Could of just been the saleman, perhaps he was a complete tw*t and upsets everyone, you never know.
What did they do to upset your other half?
The UCH controls most of the electronic units, including the engine immobilzer decoder.

Get a clio its cheaper, goes well, build quality aint as bad as everyone makes out.
Most rattles etc, but as to break downs not many at all with the 172.
If you aint to fussed with a few knocks and rattles(all of which are fairly easy to sort) then Reno all the way.
