Yep, totally get the cost thing on the churbo, which is why I'll be doing exactly tbe same lol.
You'll notice a difference with a boost controller tbh.
The problem with running actuator pressure is the moment the turbo starts to produce positive pressure, you're applying force on the wastegate...
Also, I'd be looking at porting the wastegate itself as from researching the chinese garrett copies, they are typically no where near as large as the should be
I'm following your build with interest as I'm going down the same route.
Regarding boost control, using actuator pressure is very old school and typically doesn't give a very good boost profile.
I'll be using an electronic boost controller (there's quite a few decent 2nd hand ones kicking...
Thats sort of what I was thinking. Its only a very slight burr, but may possibly interfere with the seal.
I'll have a fettle with it and see how it looks.
I was planning on running a low pressure boost system on this engine.
As long as there's nothing sitting proud I couldn't see as it'd be a...
Hi all,
So I'm in the process of repairing my spare engine and found things were worse than expected.
The valves on the exhaust side are all bent, though intake seem OK but not willing to take a chance so the plan was to replace the lot. Then I noticed the bent valves have clipped the very...
Did a bit of you tubing on churbos......the waste gates themselves aren't as big as the Garretts they're based on and it looks like its a common mod to drill them out.
Obvs, with a smaller wastegste the actuator are has to open the flapper more the control the boost.
Worth a look at some of the...
Resurrecting this.......so can I replace the four that have failed, or is it best practice to change them all?
I've checked the others visually and they all look ok, but obviously you can never tell.
Any thoughts?
Yes.....this week, and this perfectly describes everything thats happening to me, including the black spark plug but on no.3 on mine.
Only after unplugging injector no.3 and fetling with the wire did it run OK.
I changed coilpack, ht leads, sparks and swapped out no.3 injector with a spare I...
A quick read up shows these as likely causes:
Faulty Pre-Catalyst oxygen sensor
Faulty wiring/connections
Short or open ground in the wiring
Blown Fuse
Engine coolant temperature sensor is not operating correctly
Faulty Power Control Module
Rob, really appreciate you taking the time to write that up and its given me loads to think on!
Daft as it sounds I'd not given too much thought to budget, as my thinking was it'll just take a little longer to get it finished as the cost goes up.
My current thoughts are to keep it relatively...
Looks good Steve and following with interest as I'm heading down the same route!
Regarding your fuel rail......I looked at a phase 1 rail and the part number is the same as a 2003 2.0 Laguna.
Just wondering if this is a possibility instead of trying to track down a rail from a phase 1?
Hi all,
As the title really.
Looking at the part number I found on a fuel rail from a (claimed) Mk1 172, its coming up as the same as part number for a Laguna II 2003. Is this the case??
Any way to tell the difference from the pic?
Just run the part number on the rail, and its coming up as a laguna II 2003 fuel rail....are the rails interchangeable?
Mmmm, thoughts on this phase 1 injector rail?

Looks similar to the one I currently have on mine, but I could be wrong
So after a late night reading up.on builds on this forum, I'm leaning toward a low boost system to keep it as simple as possible being my first na to turbo conversion.
There a 182 turbo conversion going on at the moment which I'm watching with great interest and may replicate using the EFI...
Hi All,
So a while ago the engine in my 172 let go lost all power on the motorway and meant a long drive home in an AA van....sad times.
I duly replaced the engine with the intention of 'doing something' with the broken engine. Until now its just sat in my garage, but now I've got the urge to...
Awsome.....worth while getting the full kit it seems. I paid £15 for each of those nuts 🤷♂️🤦♂️
Thought I'd read up on all this before buying the bits. Ah well, lesson learnt!
Much thanks for the help
I had no spacer at all! I seems the previous owner used the top hat to secure it all so had it like this:
Spring
Spring top
Bearing
Top mount rubber
No spacer No securing nut
Top hat holding it all together.
The Febri kit comes with the bearing, rubber doughnut and top hat, so I had to buy...
I know this has been done a fair bit but...
Fitted a new Febi topmount kit with the newer version combined nut/spacer, and now the top hats are sitting really a lot higher than I'd have thought was right.
Everything has been fitted in the correct order and the bearings are the right way round...
Anyone seen this happen to cam followers before? Four of the followers on the intake side failed and left me stranded on the M1 a few weeks ago.
I was planning on sorting this out and potentially building a boosted engine, but I'm unsure if this would have led to any other damage.
Brilliant build and so tidy!
I'm planning on building a boosted engine for my 172 and wanted a build to follow, and I think yours is perfect!
I wont need to make as much power as it'll be for road and maybe the odd track day, so I think 280 - 300hp would be more than adequate. Any advice on...
Nice black 182 with nice shiny aftermarket exhausts.
Had a bit of a play on the A3 between Bordon and Portsmouth (I was in my Monoco blue 172) and then ganged up on a golf R32 lol
