    172 vs. Scooby STi 7

lol ive not even read most of this thread cos Ive heard all the arguments before. But let me say this. If someone in a 172 toasted someone in a STi7 then they toasted them end of story. Probably the other driver wasnt a very good driver to get outrun by a 172, if so thats his tough sh*t. Makes...

    18inch wheels on a valver

BTW the handling is lovely, no major problems, a bit more tramlining than before because of the 215 tyre, breakaway on fast, hard cornering not quite as progressive as on 15s. The thing I did notice was that the ride quality was a lot better even with 35 profile tyres; even my wife noticed it...

    18inch wheels on a valver

They go on (just) but I had to do a lot of chopping to get them in there. About 3 or 4mm between the bottom of the spring platform and the top of the tyre (215/35/18). But as Rob says, mine is dropped 35mm. A 19s arches should swallow them fairly easily I would have thought? Im pretty sure...

    Which williams

Well I think everyones pretty much said it here.Willy 1 for basic hardcore thrills, the purists option. 2s much easier to find but you get the electric mirrors. 3 is a brighter blue than the others (Monaco Blue) and you get the toys. Personally Id find it hard to choose. As a car Id want the...

    Brake pad upgrade-recommendations

Ive found Ferodo DS2000 will stand up to track abuse and fast road use with very little fade, maybe a little bit after 20 minutes of continuous track time and heavy braking. The good thing about them is you only need to dab them a couple of times and then thats it, theyre ready for action, no...

lol Anyway James, I think youve done right. Were in the 21st century now; how hard can it be for a manufacturer who must spend millions on car design to build a car that doesnt rattle and squeak? Its just laziness and shonky build. OK we all joke about French build quality but when most people...

    Motorway Spped

Well I just cruise at wherever I feel the half way mark on the accelerator (16v owners will know what I mean) - in 5th on the motorway that means it usually sits quite comfortably at around 110...oops.

    Williams engine fitted!

Yeah 2.0 is solid power, I cant think of anyone whos gone to 2 litre whos not been well happy with it. The problem I have with this is that i dont wanna pay 2 grand+ for a hands off conversion - I want to source the engine myself and fit it myself, but the problem is (apart from the fact that...

    If you had £100...

Yeah fix it definitely. Its no good doing the mods if the base car is a heap. In other words you cant polish a turd! Get it running sweet first then get busy on the lowering. Id say slam it so its an inch off the floor, it will look the nuts even without alloys.

    F7P breather system

Gotcha - that all makes sense. But just out of interest - lets say there was a significant amount of oil in the vapour and you wanted to get it out, what kind of a filter could you use to remove it and allow clean air to pass through? Would that even be possible? Or would you be better off...

    F7P breather system

James - Im fitting a BMC Carbon Dynamic Airbox (CDA). Matt C has already done it with a custom made throttle body adapter and a standard 16v CDA. Ive got a special short and fat version designed for a BMW 3.0 Z3 which is the only one that will fit in my engine bay the way I want to do it. Still...

    F7P breather system

BTW I see your point about blow-by, but the F7P is renowned for using a lot of oil. 1 litre per 1000 miles is not uncommon; F7P lumps that lose a lot of oil are the norm, it must be just the way the lump is designed. My basic question is: is it better to *burn off* the oil or to *filter it out*...

    F7P breather system

Fair enough Joe, thats what I needed to know, not really being an expert on breather systems. So what I seem to be picking up is that I definitely should retain the breather connection to upstream of the TB, so that the system will work properly. But Im still unclear about the question of oil...

    Water in inlet manifold

Yeah an engine can take a fine mist of water no problem, it just cools down the inlet charge a bit. But buckets of it wont do you any good! I remember when we had the bad floods a year or two back and a woman in front of me obviously thought she was invincible in her husbands 4x4. As she went...

    FAO nick read

I cant remember either - but yes wheelbolts are an obvious one, then look at the wishbones and suspension setup behind the wheel - a looseness in any of these components is likely to affect the wheel itself. One thing though, if it is the balljoints, its only a little bit extra to buy a whole...

too rich or too lean, any problem

In theory, best power is at a ratio *slightly* richer than stoichiometric (the perfect air/fuel ratio). Richer than this is not really harmful to the engine but will not increase power and in fact will begin to lose you power the richer you go. You will also get problems like bore wash and plug...

    Power Engineering Results-Good & Bad :-(

oh dear another how a rolling road works thread! My *opinion* which anyone can take or leave: 1. You cannot compare results at two different rolling roads eg Car A gets 130 hp at RR A and Car B gets 140 at RR B, this doesnt mean that Car A is less powerful than Car B. As we are generally...

    To declare.....or not

Yes all insurance will count any kind of ECU mod as a chip. Some are more twitchy about it than others. Its not unknown for insurance assessors to get their approved garages to run a diagnostic on it and then find out that theres an ECU error - a common effect when you chip a car. If it can be...
