car looks proper rogered unfortunately... probably looking at over a grand to repair it yourself, and thats relying on nothing being bent underneith...

taylor, looks like the backbox is just missaligned?
undo the U clamp for the backbox, support it with something and turn until the tailpipes are level, then tighten up the clamp. Then just play with the exhaust mount to get it sitting a little higher.
not really, i think thats a rubbish quote to be honest... seeing as its not actually you they're insuring on the car.
if your going to do it, get a proper quote in your name with no named drivers. This way your insurance is valid and you can build up your NCD. Imagine when your 21 and you want...
coolant levels going down rapidly is an easy one to spot, doesnt necessarily mean HGF though, could just a be a burst pipe... but it can be a sign. also the coolant will probably be a mucky dark brown colour.
my 172 isnt as bad as you describe, i certainly dont try and floor it but when driving normally from cold at 30mph i can feel a surge and everything wakes up after a few mins, then the temp guage starts moving.

for the fronts, use the structural supports that run down the car... not the sills which WILL fold.
if you look under the car there's 2 square section beams than run down the car, they're about 2 inches thick, cant miss em. for the rear, use the rear axel, again avoiding the jacking points on...
