If anyone's still looking, I drove Rentech Mike's 172 with no power steering and a standard steering wheel this afternoon.
F*** me, it felt like it still had power steering fitted - but then I'm used to a 350mm wheel and the standard one is quite a bit bigger.

Mine just gets a light blow with an air hose every 6k. Ran my ITG panel filter like that for the best part of 100k miles with no noticeable build up of crap or decrease in preformance.

I'm at 80-90 mph in less than a 1/4 mile, so after that I'm struggling against the wind, and all the others can just power on through.

Starting at Renault's quoted 1,021 kg kerb weight, everything I've removed or swapped has saved 117 leaving me at 904.
A conservative estimate is 7kg saving from binning the pump, pipework, resevoir, and swapping the powered rack for a manual one.
Lose 7kgs, gain 7 bhp...winner all round.

That lot got me to 176bhp which was the last figure (blue line) then off came the steering pump/rack and on went the 'Maxogen' to give the latest figure...
Part of mine's outside waiting to be taken to the dump, the other part is in a wheatfield in deepest Devon!
