Technically, they make a difference. I personally couldn't tell any real difference in handling characteristics and feel...they just give you more grip/traction.

Mine's been in dialy use for well over three years, and I tighten the f*** out of it to keep my hips pinned.
My seatbelt show only the slightest area of wear - nothing at all to be concerned about.
