Is this car good or not?

Convertible Toyota Celica... Don't know if it's any good, but weren't they something like £30k when new?

    Brakes!!!!!!

Pointless exercise mate. All you need is braided lines and good fluid for the road. For track, Brembo HC discs and Ferodo DS2500's work well for most people. And don't bother spending any money on the rears, as they do absolutely fook all anyway.

    Stripped Valver...Est Weight?

Heavy as standard then...I thought they were more like 106 GTi's and Saxo VTS's - they're about 850kgs aren't they?

    Stripped Valver...Est Weight?

Less than that I'd say, closer to 800 kgs or so? Aren't they less than 900 standard with everything in?

    2 new 205/45 V michelins ordered!

If I were you I'd get that in writing. Some call-centre monkey told you it was fine. The insurance assessor on the other hand, having spotted different sized tyres front and rear, will contact Renault to find out if in their opinion the vehicle was safe. Renault will respond with "It's...

    2 new 205/45 V michelins ordered!

Be careful mixing tyre sizes - cars like an MR2 are designed to have different widths - wider at the back etc. from the factory. Clios aren't. I'm not saying it'll f*** up the handling or anything, but lets say you have a "moment" and collide with a kerb/end up in a ditch. The first...

    Cambelt change

I booked mine today for the 72k cambelt doo-daa...and I wouldn't let anyone other than Mike at Rentech do it. I've got no idea of the cost though, I didn't ask as there's no need. I know that whatever Mike charges me will be almost 50% less than a Renault main stealer.

    Newby!

Nice one and welcome :) Gotta love the Moggie Thou - though with 175bhp probably a bit more than a Thou eh?

You just took the words right out of my mouth :D Almost 3 years and 68k miles - and I've lost count of the number of times I've justified my obsession to my wife with the "it'll never depreciate as I'm never selling it!" line LOL

I saw this last night on Motors TV, and it was the best racing I've seen in a long time :)

    172 and 182 engine difference

So what have you removed then to make your car lighter? I have a 172 Ph2 Cup, and at the factory that had 89kgs removed to make it weigh 1,021 kgs. Add those 89kgs back on and you get...1,110 kgs for a full fat Ph2 172. You either have a ph1 172, or your car weighs 1,110 kgs, or you've...

    dangerous?

I'd be more than up for a challenge if we could ever find a suitable venue...in the meantime, I'll see if I can get out this weekend to film a 100-0 video clip. Glad to see the reasoned debate continuing after Mr "I've got major issues" blaze waded in ;)

    172 and 182 engine difference

    It isn't mate, 172 Ph1 is 1,035 kgs, 172 ph2 is 1,110 kgs.

    dangerous?

Not once have I personally ever said that I could hold said braking forces through all conditions, nor would it be possible for anyone to do so on the road as the weight transfer would cause almost instant oversteer if any steering input is applied while threshold braking. I accept that ABS...

    dangerous?

They're not... I can't quote all the science bit about how the outer rubber surface actually grips the road at a molecular level, and what happens when you introduce some slip-angle (or rotational slip) but the (my) fundamental point is that tyres give more grip/traction/call it what you...

  18. Tighten My Nuts

    dangerous?

I agree with everything you've said about the benefits of ABS...but on this point I feel you are sorely wrong. Tyres give their most absolute grip when they are slipping across the road surface slightly, be that when they are accelerating, cornering, and braking. Under braking a tyre is...

    double clutching,

Always, and not just when making progress either. It's essential to prolong the life of your clutch + gearbox, and also helps to keep the car balanced when braking and entering a turn.

Had my first "pop" - how do I get more?

Out for another thrash this afternoon, popped once again. Then I noticed the exhaust is blowing slightly. Would that explain it - oxygen getting in to help it ignite?

Decat on, 4 weeks, 2,000 miles, 1 trackday, no warning light...why?

Had my first "pop" - how do I get more?

Out for a thrash, approaching a 3rd gear corner hard in 4th, onto the brakes, blipped as I dropped a gear as I normally do, then as it continued to run down in 3rd, the exhaust popped :D Tried it repeatedly after that to no avail. What actually makes it happen? What can I do to make it do...

How long should 172 wheel bearings last?

I'm still on my original bearings after 67k miles and countless track/airfield days. Sounds like something else is causing it in your case...either that or you keep getting bearings from a bad batch.
