your taking a few hundred for that if you do it yourself, how desperate does he want to get rid? does he know how much they go for? list all the problems to him plus it needs a mot, then make him an cheeky offer....he can only say no and negotiate :)
personally i wouldn't go down the stealth route, i think it can look like your exhaust is blowing. yozza exhaust are expensive, but i suppose yo will only buy once
just do them up tight with a suitable bar( providing you haven't got girly arms ) and you will be fine. after all you will be the one undoing them at the side of the road when you get a flat!
mixed driving i get 300 to a tank , roughly 37 mpg according ty the computer. stick it on the motorway and reset the mpg computer and you will easily see 40+
